Will you be my sunshine for one last day?

You Are my Sunshine - Wood grain

(click any of the pictures for a larger view)

I know, strange title isn’t it?   But not if you want to purchase the stamp I used in my project today.   July 31st at midnight this lovely single stamps goes back in the cupboard and likely won’t be seen again.

The title of the post also reflects kind of how I’m feeling about the real sunshine in my mountain valley.

For the last few days we’ve been surrounded by smoke, smoke and more smoke.  The air quality board even rates us today as being unhealthy to breathe outside.  Wow…now that’s something we don’t hear often in my neck of the woods.   Not entirely sure what to do about that either, except stay inside with the windows and doors sealed and hope the air inside holds out.

There are 24 fires burning in Southern Oregon at the moment and a couple of them are within about 30-50 miles and making their presence felt with smoke practically down to the ground.   When you cool your house by opening up in the evenings that’s just not possible, so more than the fire is heating up right about now.   Please God…much as I love the sun (well in moderation – LOL) …could we please have some rain to wash out the fire and clear the smoke.  I think the 1,000 or so firefighters would really appreciate that right about now too.   I’m also thinking 1,000 of these cards would be well received by those crews too.  Anyone want to come stamp a bunch of these?  I’ve got the stamp, ink and dies if you’ve got the paper.   Or you can get the stamp for yourself and let your local fire guys and gals know how much you appreciate their hard work.

Here’s a few more in a variety of colors…including one that’s almost psychadelic as we used to say in the 60’s and will have you seeing dots everywhere.  Some have had their lattice upgraded with the Woodgrain Background stamp.  Can you tell I went for simple by NOT watercoloring most of the text stamps on these cards.  Of course if you want more sunshine you can use a Daffodil Delight Marker to add that extra bit of brightness.

You Are My Sunshine - Turquoise

I hope you’ll pardon the crumples in a couple of the cards.  They got sat on by a Big Shot and no I don’t mean a movie star.   Sad the things that happen to poor defenseless cards at a Stamp Camp isn’t it? 😀

You Are My Sunshine - Pumpkin Pie

Wouldn’t this Pumpkin Pie one be great for the Fall?

You Are My Sunshine - Daffodil Delight

Lots of bright primary colors on this one with the Real Read Polka Dot Designer Series Paper and the Bright Daffodil Delight and Gumball Green.  After making this version I dreamed and saw polka dots everywhere…on everything.

You Are My Sunshine - Pear Pizzazz

Here’s the list of makings and also a link if you want to download the same directions I shared with the Stamp Campers.

Stamps:  Sunshine (single stamp #132671, $5.95), A Round Array, Various sentiment sets for inside.

Ink: Early Espresso, Daffodil Delight, Gumball Green and Crumb Cake Classic pads, Daffodil Delight & Gumball Green Marker.

Paper: Gumball Green, Early Espresso, Daffodil Delight, Naturals White, Naturals Ivory, Pear Pizzazz, So Saffron

Punches: 7/8” Scallop Circle, Bird Builder, Itty Bitty Shapes Punch Pack

Other: Big Shot , Lattice Bigz die, Perfect Polka Dots Embossing Folder, dimensional

You are my sunshine Lattice Card  – PDF of Directions

Oh and in case you are curious here’s the inside:

You Are my Sunshine - Inside - Crumb Cake and Daffodil Delight

Not sure why my camera added that blotchy dot in the middle of the text but probably a lighting issue.  With the smoke obscuring my natural light I’m having a fun time with picture taking.

For those of you with botanical purists in your vicinity who want to know why you are showing sunflowers in June and July….tell them they are black eyed susans…calms them right down!  Yep…that came up at Stamp Camp.

To see what other Single Stamps are going away at midnight you can download the following:

Single_Flyers_Assortment3_US(1) – Assortment 3 Single Stamps

Single_Flyers_Assortment4_US(1) – Assortment 4 Single Stamps

That’s it for today.   If you love the singles stamps…don’t delay today is the very last day.

Frugal Friday checks out Stampin’ Up’s “Artistic Etchings”…One stamp set two very different looks!

Hi All,

Welcome back to Frugal Friday.  Today I’m looking at a favorite set of mine that definitely fits the frugal bill in both price and utility.   To see a full list of frugally priced under $20 stamp sets and wheels check out the lists in my Scribd files or the links in the right hand side bar.  There is a list for the Idea Book & Catalog and a separate one for the Holiday Mini.

I’m a big fan of the new Vintage trend that Artistic Etchings represents.  Lots of possibilities for out of the box thinking and creating.  And when it comes to frugal stamping that versatility is a key factor.  When one stamp set that is moderately priced to begin with can be used in multiple ways for multiple occasions you know you have a winner.

Tip: When looking at new stamp sets I try to find at least 5 different ways to use a set.  If I can accomplish that goal then I know I’ve found a “keeper”.   I also make a point of creating projects (or at least sketching them out) with every stamp in the set when I get it so I can discover the utility of each image.

Here are two very different looks created by my friend and Stampin’ Up partner Cheryl for some of our recent events.

First up:

From our September Stamp Camp. Ignore the Kraft looking sheet in the background – I used that for contrast so the Very Vanilla Cardstock would show up on my scanner.

Stamps:  Artistic Etchings, En Francais,  Perfect Punches

Card Stock: Very Vanilla, Basic Black

Ink: Basic Black, Crumb Cake, Cherry Cobbler

Punches:  1 3/8”x 5/8” Oval Punch, 1 ¾”x 7/8” Oval Punch

Other: Big Shot, Vintage Wallpaper Embossing Folder, Sponge Daubers (for Crumb Cake ink), dimensionals

While the Thanks image looks like its a combination of stamps or Designer paper it’s really the one image from Perfect punches that creates the awesome background and text all in one image!   A little judicious antiquing with Crumb Cake (AKA – Kraft) ink adds to the dimensionality of the image.   Note:  The circle medallion image was stamped before the texturing with the embossing folder.   Some stampers at the Camp also included other images from the set (Crown, key, etc. some in Marina Mist) that added to the collage feel of the card.  They also had a choice of Embossing folders for different textures.

Note:  If you are looking for other ornament ideas the Crown and the “bar pin” image fit perfectly inside the Ornament punch shape and even the circle medallion looks pretty cool.   If you used an ornament punch shaped stencil you could create a fabulous background paper of scattered ornaments across the page with many of the images from this set.   The key even fits sideways!

***

And Second a very different look:

Artistic Etchings as a Christmas Ornament!   This particular card is a CASE of Ann Clemmer’s very inventive card – you can see her blog here.  Even though it’s quite simple it still packs a great deal of punch and was a favorite at this months Christmas Stamp a Stack.

Stamps: Artistic Etchings, Lovely as a Tree,  A Cardinal Christmas (greeting)

Ink: Riding Hood Red, Versamark, White StazOn

Papers:  Riding Hood Red, Cherry Cobbler, Sahara Sand,

Other: Modern Label Punch, 1-3/4″ Circle Punch, Silver Embossing Powder, Embossing Buddy, Heat Tool, Dimensionals, Scissors

*****

Artistic Etchings

Clear Mount: #120573,  $14.95

Wood Mount: #118517,  $18.95

An old-world cathedral, a street café in the shadow of the Eiffel Tower, the stately decorum of a royal palace—these are the types of images invoked by our Artistic Etchings set. Add its vintage look and feel to your cards and scrapbook pages to set a romantic, nostalgic mood. Available both in wood-mount and clear-mount.

Set Quantity: 6

Combines wonderfully with textured embossing folders like Vintage Wallpaper and Finial Press and many more.   I’ve even thought that the round medallion would work to approximate a Mandala (Buddhist mystic wheel image), a Sioux shield maybe placed behind the Buffalo from the In Wilderness stamp set.  The longer lacy image reminds me of one of my Grandmothers favorite pins.   And of course all the images will work alone or together to create wonderful One Sheet Wonders or background papers.

From simple to complex the possibilities are endless.

Frugal Friday: Itty Bitty Background stamps & wheels

Hi All,

In the background – the little guys add to the fun but get so little of the credit.

These little stamps featured today pack a lot of wallop for such tiny background stamps.   And some like the itty bitty background set has become such a must have its been kept in the Stampin’ Up Catalog for more than 10 years.  Originally it started life as a hostess stamp and then was brought back by popular demand – not to mention because of its awesome utility.

Designed to add interest and texture to the backgrounds these stamps can be used in a variety of ways.  And all of them, given their low price, will spare your pocketbook any trauma.

Click on the picture to see a larger image.

Itty Bitty Backgrounds – #114996, $14.95, pg. 132 IBC

Don’t have a Spritz tool?  You can replicate that spatter look with images from this set.  The little open circles also works for underwater fish bubbles or falling snow.

A true workhorse that rarely gets full credit in galleries and blog details and a great way to add interest to otherwise plain pages and projects.

Boho Backgrounds – #114940, $17.95, pg. 123 IBC

A couple of background stamps, a couple of sayings, borders and one larger image make this set a wonderful bargain.   The one block with words and borders can either be inked selectively with markers or cut up into individual stamps.

Sprinkles – #115076, $14.95, pg.   IBC

From hearts to flowers to butterflies and little funky images this set has it all.  Create beautiful background papers for spring or add a “sproing” to the background of a Lots of Bots stamped card.  Or when you’re not sure just what that is coming out of the sky on a cloudy winter day perhaps the little funky image stamp would work for that kind of weather too – LoL!

After stampin you can then decide whether to color in the images or leave them plain or even emboss with clear or metallic embossing powders for an even different look or as part of a resist technique.  Though other small backgrounds have retired.  Stampin’ Up has kept this one in the line up for the last few years because (I think) of its versatilty and popularity.

If you enjoyed all of the above small elements there is a newer set as well that meets this same function –    Though it doesn’t meet my Under $20 frugal test it’s still well worth a look.

Extreme Elements – #115181, $26.95, pg. 81 IBC has flair and drama and a modern edginess to it that makes it well worth it’s somewhat higher price than my usual recommendations.  It coordinates with many of our teen stamps while also working with many grown up sets as well.  Many samples I’ve seen add a definite cool factor when combined with our many SU stencils and stamps.

And if price is a factor this cool set is also available as a brush set – download for My Digital Studio (MDS)  or other graphic software at the very reasonable cost of $1.95!!   Order #119099 in the online store.

Also during May this is one of the stamp sets whose purchase earns you a free set of brads – check out the May special flyer in my sidebar

Tightwad Tuesday is Raining Cats and Dogs

Hi All,

Well it did seem to be raining Cats and Dogs and everything else but the kitchen sink right up until the Sun came out over the weekend.  Then again who knows by the time this actually posts on Tuesday it may be doing so again.  I do live in Oregon after all and even though it’s May old man Winter is having a hard time letting go.  One day we’re in the 70’s and the next the 40’s!   I keep reminding myself that last year we had snow in June so I’m keeping a weather eye out (or is that an eye on the weather?) for falling objects of any kind.

And lest it sounds like I’m complaining I should say that part of why I moved to Oregon was for the weather.  After years in Southern/Central Coastal California it’s invigorating to experience real seasonal weather….have to say I don’t miss the earthquakes either.  The only time I waver in that enjoyment is when I open my heating bills!  Though again I have to admit I prefer the lower end of the temperature scale to the higher.

So with that in mind….. welcome to another installment of Tightwad Tuesday where the bargains and the inspiration (hopefully) also fall thick and fast.  For a complete list of other stamps and wheels under $20 check out the downloadable list in my right hand sidebar.  And now that the Summer Mini is live I’ve added a new document to my Scribd files that outline the mini’s stamps and wheels also under $20.

Okay my friends….I’m guessing you’re asking yourself what took this crazy animal loving cat lady so long to get around to these two sets.  Well…hmmm…I guess I have no real good answer to that one but now that we’re here and featuring the stamp versions of my fur friends I’m feeling just as frisky and crazy as they are.   I guess procrastination builds up the energy supply.   So get out your goldfish crackers and a glass (bowl?) of milk and prepare to get cute, cuddly and possibly furry.

C is for Cat – #115764, $15.95, pg. 61  IBC

You can just bet I jumped on this set when it was offered for free during Sale -a-Bration.  Not sure why I waited so long but now I have it I can’t stop coming up with ideas for it.  Perfect for any cat lover in your life or to document your own cat’s antics in scrap pages or cards.

Given my own Wicket cat’s sharp claws I’m planning on using these stamps with some Craft ink to create my very own custom pincushion for my sewing table.  Seems appropriate somehow given all the holes Wicket has put in yours truly over the years (or even just this week!).

Here’s what SU has to say about this set:

Cat lovers will purr with delight when they see this adorable set. With images and greetings for all sorts of different occasions, you’ll find the perfect accent for your next cat-centered project!

D is for Dog – #115784, $15.95, pg. 61 IBC

I love the freewheeling look of this dog as he/she trots along ( I could wish they had also included a moving image like this on the Cat set too but then most cats tend to sit or lay down more than they trot :D).

The quote from Martin B. is also terrific and so totally true. A few talented stampers have even managed to make this dogs tail wag for real in their cards.   Looking at all the images here it’s hard not to picture Scrap pages, background papers, cards and more flowing from this one set of stamps.  Add some Acrylic Paints to the mix and you could have fun doggying up bowls and other doggy paraphanelia.  Add Craft inks and a heat tool for tee shirts, quilt blocks and other fun items.

Can’t you just picture a card for your favorite fella with the caption…You dog!  If you have My Digital Studio you can make it happen then stamp the dog images from this set to make it a hybrid project.  You can also use this set with the mini milk carton die to create a doghouse with dog at the entrance!

Here’s what Stampin Up has to say about the set:

A dog may be a man’s best friend, but this stamp set is a woman’s best creative buddy! With images and greetings for everything from cards and gifts to pages and decorations, this set offers unlimited opportunity for the dog lover in all of us!

Coordinating Wheel:

P is for Paw – Standard Wheel – #115620, $6.50 pg. 61 & 205

While it was tricky finding links to share for this wheel.  I have no trouble at all envisioning its use.   I love the mix of small and large – possible cat and dog paws.  Or Kitten and cat, puppy and full dog paws.  Kind of like a free for all game of Twister by the fur face set.  Hmmm….kind of looks like my entryway floor during the Winter months too!

Tailgating – Standard Wheel – #105519, $6.50, pg. 58 & 205

While considered a coordinating wheel for the Loads of Love stamp set I tend to think of it as a doggy wheel.   Perfect if you love to color with pencils or markers Tailgating is not one of those wheels that will change your life, but it’ll sure make you smile. Use it with the Loads of Love stamp set or send the image to any dog lover; you’ll love what you come up with every time

I hope, my fellow Frugalistas that  you’ve enjoyed this companion animal addition of Tightwad Tuesday.  Check back later in the week as I race to get the rest of the Under $20 sets not yet featured up and going before the new catalog is issued in July and the Last Chance list (that might contain a few of these already featured sets) for retiring stamps that debuts in June.

Hugs and Blessings – Jean

Isn’t it lovely when two species try to work together…….

Of course this is more my life and what I have to deal with……..Or as Wicket would say why give humans the can openers and pop tops and give us just a tongue!  As always with cats…its a control issue!

Tightwad Tuesday: Last of the Occasions mini sets

Hi All,

With only 3 more days until the Occasions Mini expires I thought I better finish up the sets that meet my Under $20 test of best priced stamps.  Stampin’ Up has made meeting that goal easier than ever by introducing their line of Clear Mount Stamps.  Three of the sets featured below would have been out of the running if Clear Mount versions weren’t available.  Now of course, since they are available in both mounting options, you as the consumer get to make the choice in where you consider the value lays.  For some of you Wood Mount is the best choice for many reasons and for the rest it’s Clear Mount all the way.  Whichever you choose the images and the rubber are still the same wonderful designs you’ve come to expect from Stampin’ Up!

So which among the fabulous designs in this years Occasions mini were your favorite?  Which are you rooting for finding in the new catalog coming out in July?  If you picked Tiny Tags (featured today) or Vintage Vogue you are in luck.  Stampin’ Up already told demonstrators a few months ago that those two sets along with the Build a Bear dies and stamp sets will be continuing on into the new catalog.  Several other items will be continuing after the Occasions mini retires and may still make  it into the catalog as well.  You can see the detailed list in this earlier post – https://jlfstudio.wordpress.com/2010/04/19/stampin-up-news-occasions-mini-carryovers

Click on pictures to see larger image.

W = wood    CL  = Clear Mount   IBC = Idea Book & Catalog (main catalog)

Tote-ally Tess – #118595 (CL), $16.95, pg. 41 Occasions mini

While at first glance Tess appears to be totally Demo or totally stampin’ oriented she actually has many possibilities.  One of SU’s first People in action stamps that reminds me of the Hanna stamps line and a few others out there using more realistic (for a stamp anyway) people and with movement implied in the lines.  That uplifted hand is perfect for adding other images from other sets.  Birthday cakes, packages, maybe a bird, etc.  A friend of mine also calls her a Vanna White wanna be….hm….maybe with an alphabet stamp set included?

Tiny Tags – #118592 (CL), $16.95, pg. 28 Occasions mini

Tiny Tags aren’t just for tags – Lol!  Though of course they work perfectly for this.  Perfect too for use with our Simply Adorned jewelry line of charms and to create my favorite art form “inchies”.  Also coordinates with our new Jewelry Tag punch in the new punch format.

Coordinating Punch – Jewelry Tag Punch – #117190, $10.95

So many things you can do with this punch besides the obvious.  Of course if you have a sale of some sort coming up it does work for price tags!  Punch Creation Crafters are using this in any number of picture art pieces.  My favorite is creating fences (as in this post here) or overlapping to create a woven basket look.

That’s it for the Occasions Mini previews and links!  Only 3 more days to order!

Hugs and Blessings – Jean

Frugal Friday & the Occasions mini celebrates Mother’s Day

Oops!  Frugal Friday has slipped over into Savings Saturday…..

Hi All,

Life, time sense and knowing what day of the week it is have slipped just a bit so do me a favor and pretend it’s still Friday okay….LOL!

With Mothers Day on the horizon I started looking through our catalog and the Occasions mini in particular to feature here on Frugal Friday.  Of course with this being a Frugal Friday post I concentrated on stamp sets under $20 and also looked at sets not previously featured.  Of course any of the last few Frugal posts sets would work as well – in particular the Spring and Easter sets featured here – https://jlfstudio.wordpress.com/2010/03/13/frugal-friday-frugal-stamp-sets-for-spring-and-beyond/ & here –  https://jlfstudio.wordpress.com/2010/03/09/tightwad-tuesday-looks-towards-easter-spring/

The second of those links also feature the Well Scripted set that has the perfect texts for most occasions including Mothers Day and Fathers Day.

While looking I was talking about the Occasions mini with a friend the other day and they were bemoaning the fact that there was only one Mother’s Day stamp set in it….say what!!!!!!….I don’t know about you but I’ve found that it’s possible to use almost any stamp set to create a special  Mother’s Day card.  All that’s required is a bit of imagination.  After all Mothers come in all shapes, sizes and are pretty generally creative people.  And as all you mom’s out there know they also pretty much always love anything a kid gives them that tells them they are loved and thought about and appreciated.   With that in mind the following sets were my special picks for use in creating Mothers Day cards.

W= Wood Mount, CL= Clear Mount

Several if not all of these sets are available in both wood and clear mount though for purposes of my frugal under $20 definition several I’m featuring are only shown with the clear mount option.   I still can’t get over saving $4-$8 per set with this option.  Adds so many more stamps to my possibles.  In fact I have yet to see a Clear Mount stamp set that isn’t under $20!  I might add that for those of you hooked on digital there are even better deals to be found.  Vintage Vogue is available for $3.95 as a digital download.  Can’t get better than that now can you?

Stampin’ Up sample creations from the online store:

My Matryoshka – #115213 (W), $14.95 – #118583 (CL), $11.95

Russian nesting dolls were the inspiration for this unique stamp set; use it with the clever sentiment, or to make your own Russia-inspired projects. Available in both wood-mount and clear-mount.

Set Quantity: 4

Something about this set caught my eye when I first saw it in the Occasions mini.   Reminded me of my trip to Russia back in the 1960’s when I was 8 years old.  Stampin’ Up did a great job of capturing the look and feel of these traditional dolls as well as the Slavic feel of the floral images.  Perfect for those who like to color with pencils, watercolors, markers, etc.   Seemed perfect for Mother’s Day as well since after all we were all of us hidden under our Mothers heart before we were born.

With All My Heart – #118134 (W), $17.95 –  #118623 (CL), $13.95 – pg. 12 Occasions mini

Set Quantity – 6

With a bit of a retro pop art feel this set is only limited by your imagination and creativity.  From friendship to Valentine’s to Mother’s and Father’s day and beyond the possibilities are truly “far out”.

The brackets around the word friend can be inked individually and used with any text or alphabet set.  Wonderful images to create your own background papers you can go simple or complex as far as techniques used.  I’ve seen quite a few with a wonderful resist technique that blew my socks off.  Also this stamp set coordinates with the Occasions only Specialty DSP Sending Love.  Lots of built in glitter on that paper gives you a few ideas for using this set with shimmer and glitter as well.   The two together could really bring a shine to your Mom’s eyes don’t you think!

Another though though perhaps on the wacky side….If you want to go  all Jettson’s or other world for your Mothers Day card you might consider using this years new catalog sets Greetings Earthling or Lots of Bots.   When I saw the alien with the bubble helmet and ray gun (or is it a drill for fixing things around the house) I immediately thought Mom (okay I also thought about the Jettson’s too).  On the other hand the alien with the eye stalks might also be a mom since she can see from all directions with those eyes!  And doesn’t the wide eyed kid alien have that perfect “who me”? expression mothers all over the universe know so well.     Of course the Robots have lots of potential too…since most kids have a screw loose here and there…but as you’ll notice even robot kids know to bring flowers for their Mom’s.

Another set to consider though not featured here today is Happy Together (catalog pg.72) with the Momma Quail and babies and the flower there are lots of possibilities.

The set Friends Rock also caught my eye for a modern style card with a bit of retro to it as well.  After all Mom’s Rock! so why not tell them so!

And of course sets like All Holidays and Teeny Tiny wishes contain Mother’s Day and other much used greetings.  While priced considerably over my usual $20 limit their value lays in the number of stamps in the set and the wide ranging use you’ll get from them.  Teeny Tiny Wishes at $36.95 sounds expensive until you realize that you get 24 separate greetings in the set!  That’s only $1.54 each…talk about a bargain!

Well that’s all for this edition of Frugal Friday (no matter what day it is when you actually read this :D).   I hope this look at some non traditional Mother’s Day possibilities has given you some ideas and shown you the versatility Stampin’ Up! builds into all their designs.

Hugs and Blessings and TGIF! – Jean

Tightwad Tuesday…Two Steps into Spring

Hi all,

And a blessed Easter Tuesday to you all.   Have you come down off your sugar high yet?   I’ve noticed that many bloggers with kids were discussing related sugar issues yesterday.  For myself I was pretty good this year (a limited budget has that effect :D) and most of my chocolate was paper based.  Saves on calories but requires a bit more imagination to fill in the taste bud expectations – lol!

This Tightwad Tuesday post is featuring Stampin’ Up’s April – Two Step into Spring Promotion or as I’m calling it the Spring Fling!   While a few of the sets don’t meet my usual under $20 break point  even when on sale they are still a great value for the money given the number of stamps in each set.  Even the preview set on offer averages just a bit over $2 per stamp in the 18 stamp set.  And…even better….you can get it for free with a workshop or orders totalling $350.  Can’t get more frugal than free right?

This promotion features two step stamping which  is one of the techniques Stampin’ Up is famous for.  If you flip through the catalog and look for the following symbol

you’ll find quite a few sets were created to make use of this technique.  I’ve included a few links to tutorials etc that will show you the best way to make use of these very cool two step stamps.

So what is a two step stamp?  Generally that describes a set that combines more than one image to create the complete picture.  Generally a line art image and a bolder fill in image.  Most often these are florals but not always.  Stampin’ Up on their customer website has the perfect tutorial showing how these stamps work and various demo’s on their blogs and YouTube also showcase 2 step stamping.

For perfect placement the use of a Stamp a ma jig tool is recommended.  I was hoping SU would also offer a deal on this but luckily the base price is pretty low so check it out if you haven’t already aquired this tool.  For those of you with the SAMJ kicking around the back of your drawer or who have a fear of using it there are any number of tutorials on its use that you can Google for.

While the SAMJ does give perfect placement personally I can attest that when you mount these sets as clear mounts instead of on the usual wood blocks placement becomes less of an issue and can save you a bit of time and frustration.  (Here’s a great link to a tutorial showing you how to do this –http://www.jaydeestamping.com/weblog/2010/02/happy-moments-unmounting-wood-mount-stamps-to-be-clear-mount-usable-tutorial.html

One extra tip though…try to look at these stamps with new eyes.  Sometimes they can be used in ways you might not expect.  One of the bare branches of Trendy Trees works for birds feet and a couple of the tree toppers work for fireworks!   While the two step sets are designed to work together, for the imaginative mind there may be other hidden uses in their rubber.

Fifth Avenue Floral – #113734, sale price $19.96 ($4.99 savings), pg. 98

5 stamps in the set

The beautiful, modern flowers in the Fifth Avenue Floral stamp set share the sophistication and styling of its namesake. You can choose to watercolor these line-art images, or leave them uncolored and layer them for a refined floral collection.

Quite a few stampers are also using the slightly sassy text stamp with any number of other images.  This set also seems to break the usual mold of 2 step in that each image is a single stamp with no fill in stamps.  Not sure why Stampin’ Up considers this a two step but it’s still a mainstay and right now on sale so you won’t hear me complaining :D!

This stamp set also coordinates well with the Manhattan Flower Impressions folder for the Big Shot. Cool use here – http://pinkpjstamper.blogspot.com/2009/05/fifth-avenue-trifold-tutorial.html

Blog Break Announcement

Sandycat is Keeping an Eye on You!

Hi All,

I just wanted to let you know I’ll be taking most of this week off (and maybe a bit more) from blogging.  Sandycat, my darling kitty I’ve shared stories and pictures with you in days past, is very ill and not likely to survive much longer so I’m trying to spend as much time cuddled with her as possible and to make her as comfortable as possible.  She’s still being funny and sweet right up to the end.  As I shared with my newsletter readers a couple of weeks ago….

Boy do I wish I had a working camera or video equipment.  A few nights ago Sandycat spent 10 minutes trying to get comfortable sitting on a tiny plate the size you put a tea cup on! (eta: a kind reader reminded me that’s actually called a saucer – lol!  Thanks Sharon!)  It was hilarious as she tried to balance without tipping the plate.  Trying to get all 4 paws under her inside the little indentation for the tea cup!  The only attraction I can figure out is that the plate was sitting under a lamp that puts out a nice bit of heat from the bulb and it was a chilly, chilly night!  Either that or she just wanted to cheer me up.  She finally gave it up as a bad job – the sitting not the cheering – and jumped down looking just a trifle embarrassed.  Hmmm…might have to post this story on my blog under the heading of crazy cat antics……
*****

Sadly life had gone from that to (also from my newsletter)….

I’m afraid this listing is just a bit on the short side this week.  Besides increasing seizures of my own my Sandycat has taken a turn for the worse and it’s looking like she won’t be with me much longer so I’ve been trying to spend more time with her as cuddling and sleeping seems to be mostly what she’s up for.  A few weeks ago she started throwing up more than usual but otherwise seemed fine so I figured she had gotten into something and just needed to work it out of her system as has happened in the past and then just in the last week or 10 days she slowly stopped eating.  Her spirits are still basically good though a tad grumpy and she’s able to drink some water but she’s dropped over half of her previous 15 pound weight and is getting weaker and weaker.  After almost 10 years together it’s hard facing the idea of losing her.  More than any of my other furry friends over the years we are something of alter ego’s for each other though some might say she’s picked up some of her craziness from me I of course contend that it’s just the opposite – lol.  She’s also probably one of the smartest and most interesting cats I’ve known.  Very mechanical and interested in people stuff in unusual ways and very expressive. I’m never in doubt about what’s on her mind.  If I can’t read her mind she’s very good at showing or acting out what it is she needs.  She’d have made a fortune on Drew Cary’s show doing charades!  Though a feral cat by birth we’ve been housemates and heartmates since she was 7 weeks old and for a feral she’s quite domesticated.  Unlike most cats she’s mastered the art of compromise – an amazing trait all on its own!  Though Wicket will still be with me, and of the two she’s a wonderful little nurse cat who watches over me very carefully, my heart is already breaking at the idea of loosing my naptime buddy who’s willing to let me be me and who manages to make each day fun and funny.

I’m not sure if I’m going to be up to getting a newsletter out this week so there may be a short hiatus.  I’ll try to keep it brief and get back to collecting goodies as I’m able.  Blog posts may be a bit light as well.

Well that’s the “skinny” as they say (yeah I know bad pun…but as I learned on the Cancer Ward  what else is a girl to do if she’s not going to sit and cry)  and I’ll be back sometime soon.

Thanks to all of you who’ve been kind enough to write, email or call.  Your encouragement has meant a lot!

Hugs and blessings (and don’t forget to hug the one’s you love) – Jean
P.S.  Though I won’t be blogging for a bit I’ll still be able to help you with any orders or questions you might have or you can place your orders directly through my online Stampin’ Up! store.  Just click on the icon in the upper right corner or send me an email or call and I’ll get it done for you.  Hugs – J.

Frugal Friday: For the Kid @ Heart from the Occasions mini

Hi All,

Another Friday has come around…amazing how fast the weeks spin round isn’t it…and it’s time for another Frugal Friday look at stamps under $20.   Today I’m focusing on some kid friendly designs that also work for we older kids at heart – stamps shown are featured in the Occasions mini.   Also a reminder that this mini has only about 6 weeks left to run and Sale-a-Bration less than 2 weeks.  Time to consider which sets you can live without and which you absolutely have to add to your stash.   Especially since for the next few days anyway you can add freebies (SAB) to your savings!

For a complete listing of all stamps and wheels under $20 both in the main catalog (IBC) and the mini’s check my sidebar and SCRIBD files.

On with the show…….

Abbreviations:    W = wood    CL  = Clear Mount   IBC = Idea Book & Catalog (main catalog)

Something Sweet – #118589 (CL), $19.95, Pg. 20 Occasions mini

Also available in French

While the gumball image maybe the most popular the other images have some alternate uses – the “handle” designed for use with the circle as a magnifying lens, a rattle or a hand mirror (or whatever else you can imagine)  can also be used alone as a baseball bat or maybe even a turkey drumstick!  Also a droopy tie for a Dad’s Day card or a wattle on a punched turkey creation.  A couple of the small images are actually flower petals and leaves – something that might not be obvious unless you looked at the pictures of the samples in the mini.     Quite a few versions of “trap” doors have been invented that allow you to pull the goodies in the treat cups insides out (assuming you want them out :D) without destroying the card.   A number of creative crafters are also using various kinds of gel to simulate a water environment to create faux snowglobe type cards.

Coordinating Product:

Sweet Treat Cups (12) – #116802, $2.95

Fox & Friends – #117020 (W), $18.95 – #118565 (CL), $14.95 – pg. 31 Occasions mini

Available in all languages – hee, hee, hee 😀

Another cute set with lots of possibilities.  Though I originally saw this as a kids only set I’ve started rethinking that a bit.   With the popularity of owls and also with graduations coming up you might find some more grown up uses for this as well.   And what guy doesn’t get up to some monkeyshines once in a while that might call for using the monkey from this set to bring him back down to earth.  Anybody else remember that game that had little plastic monkeys  that you had to link together in chains without toppling….can’t remember what it was called but I remember the groans, cries and laughter it engendered.  That fox image might also be cute as a “foxy” lady card or image on a tee shirt.

Coordinating Product: Nursery Alphabet Décor elements – see catalog for details

Love Bots Personalized Stamp – #117692 (W), $9.95, pg. 17 Occasions mini

Originally intended to work with the Love Bots Valentines I rather like the kid print type style.  This would work great with All in the Family and its accessory stamp sets or anytime you wanted a name stamp that looked like a kid printed it.   Create background papers with names for Grandma’s own crafting or scrapbooking, etc.    Plus you can use it for any 12 characters not just names.   If you have a word or short phrase you’d like to see in a childlike print this might be the way to accomplish that.

Picnic Parade (Level 2 Hostess) – #117044 (W), #118541 (CL) – free when you meet hostess requirements (not available for purchase at any price – LoL!), pg. 5 Occasions mini

Also available in French and Spanish

This has a bit of a Beatrix Potter feel to it and the combinations and permutations are endless.   From kids cards to a vintage picnic basket with lace to match you can go Spring, Easter, Summer or more general.  The Thanks and Smile images can be colored with pencils or watercolor or blender pens.  I’ve seen a wonderful number of techniques from resist to reinker, to poppin’ pastels and more.      Can’t you just see creating your very own children’s book with these characters?  O the stories that could be told!   Maybe using one of the extra large Board Books also found in the Occasions mini.

That’s it for today my sister frugalistas.  Next week will look at a few more sets from Occasions and then back to the main catalog until the new Summer Mini comes out in May.

A quick reminder that the “Freaks” Blog Hop starts Saturday!   I’m not sure where the starting point is but you can start here at Gretchen’s blog and then work your way around – http://gretchenbarron.typepad.com/my_weblog/

Till next time….

Tightwad Tuesday: Occasions stamping under $10

Hi All,

And welcome to Tightwad Tuesdays look at Occasions stamps under $10. At this price point you can purchase two of these and still be under the $20 frugal limit I use for these posts.  Such a deal!   To see the full list of Stamps under $20 check the sidebar and my SCRIBD files for both the Idea Book and Catalog and the Occasions mini.

Another reason you might want two??    Because many of these stamps featured today will work together if you let them kiss!    Kiss!!!??  you say??     Yep – that’s an official stamping term for when you transfer a stamps pattern and ink to another for a very cool effect.   See the bottom of the post for directions and a link to a tutorial PDF from Stampin’ Up!

Reminds me of a variation of the old Double Mint Gum commercials…..two, two….two stamps in one!

Keep an eye out for this cool technique with the many links listed below.

 *****

Click on pictures to see close up.   And since some of the stamp images are smaller than true size the “exploded” circles give you a close up of the true design.

Abbreviations:   W = wood    CL  = Clear Mount   IBC = Idea Book & Catalog (main catalog)

Butterfly Accent – #119211, $7.95, pg.43 Occasions mini

This stamp has a really special secret….it loves to be kissed!  Uh huh…you heard me right…well okay maybe you heard me but didn’t “get” me.   In addition to the usual meaning kissing is also a stamping technique!   In this case you could use one of the other stamps featured here such as Fine Flourish or Dot,Dot,Dot…ink it up and then bring the two stamps together face to face.  This leaves a marvelous design on the butterfly that you can then stamp onto your paper…ah now you get why the butterfly is blank!   Note: Any stamp with a desireable pattern will work for this trick.  Medallion and Bella Toile are two background stamps that also work magnificently for this.  Another “blank” stamp with kissing possibilities is C is for Cat one of the low cost catalog stamp sets available for free through Sale-a-Bration.  Now your cats could have polka dots as well as stripes (their fish too)!

 Go Green – #117074, $6.95, pg.43 Occasions mini

Perfect for St. Patrick’s Day this stamp if selectively inked will also work for those who enjoy making an environmental statement.    Of course if you are a Green Bay Packer fan it will probably work for you as well!

The small Shamrock can also be individually inked to create a background or provide an accent where ever a four leaf clover is needed.   After all while some of us may only be Irish on St. Patrick’s Day some of us are Irish all year round!

Like-O-Meter – #117667, $8.95, pg.43 Occasions mini

I’ve seen quite a few ways this stamp has been used.  Some have  inked only the thermometer section and written in or computer generated their own lists.   A few have used this as a fundraising reminder with numbers inserted to the right and the thermometer colored in.

Some chocoholics have added just one or two extra levels with of course chocolate at the top and peas or other vegetables at the bottom – lol!

I’ve even heard rumors that a few stampers actually used this to break up with their significant others who were no long so significant!  Not sure that’s what Shelli intended when she approved this design but to each their own!

Fine Flourish – #115709, $9.95, pg.42 Occasions mini

Actual stamp dimension is approx. 2-7/8″x2-5/8″

A wonderful “kissing” partner that is also pretty elegant all on it’s own.  It can be used singly or in groups.  Embossed or plain.  Perfect also for resist stamping techniques as well.   Has a bit of an Art Deco feel or even a Morris pattern feel.   Some of my favorite projects kept those types of color schemes in mind when working the design.    And much like some of our stencils you can mask off certain portions and use tiny pieces.   Works with stencils as well.    Punch a template stencil of circles for instance then stamp across the center and punch out and you will have a wonderful layering piece to use with our Medallion stamp.  Very versatile in more ways than you might think.

A to Z – #115711, $9.95, pg.42 Occasions mini

Actual stamp dimension is approx. 2-7/8″x2-5/8″

Another ideal “kissing” and background stamp.  For an interesting newsprint look you can even stamp across fabric flowers from the Pretties Kit or various punch pieces.  How about a newsprint looking 2 step Bird Punch?   Use a thumping technique with markers for multicolors or emboss for various looks as well.  Of course if you stare at it too long you might just find yourself singing the alphabet song over and over and over……

Dot, Dot, Dot – #115332, $9.95, pg.42 Occasions mini

Actual stamp dimension is approx. 2-7/8″x2-5/8″

Another ideal “kissing” stamp.  Would also work to stamp polka dots onto ribbon, pretties kit flowers and almost any other stampable surface.    Polka dots are still a fashion statement so it’s wonderful to have another back in the arsenal.  and if you are into clay projects (such as those using femo) you can use this as a texturing tool.

Little Angel – #11874 (CL), $9.95, pg.35 Occasions mini

Also available in wood mount for just a few dollars more – #117684 (W), $12.95

Whether your babies are people with skin or angels with fur you can probably come up with some fun ideas for this set.   I have to say I love the lullaby & goodnight image.  Makes me want to grab my guitar and start writing songs.   And the sweet pea image would be perfect for homemade seed packets too.

Extra Postage – #118559 (CL), $9.95, pg.37 Occasions mini

Also available in wood mount for just a few dollars more – #114405 (W), $12.95

Not just for mailing though some days the Handle with Care might not go amiss on a package or letter this set works for many, many occasions.   How about stamping Handle with Care on a large Heart die cut or punch piece and mount it on an I’m sorry type of card.   Priority works with a number of instances as well.   Maybe also a set of cards for your post person or Insurance agent?   I can picture the Extra Postage required on a scrap page about a set of twins, triplets or more.  Maybe stamped across the pregnant mom’s tum in a picture for a baby shower invite?  You’re only limited by your imagination!

Tip:   Kissing Samples and directions

 Kissing ala Stampin’ Up!

Basic Directions:

1) Ink a patterned stamp, such as one of our background stamps.

2) Press a solid, uninked stamp against the patterned stamp, transferring the pattern to the solid stamp.

3) Stamp the solid image on card stock.

Alternate Tips:

After completing Step 2, the patterned stamp can also be used for a “reverse kissing” look.

Before completing Step 2, you could ink your solid stamp image with a lighter color.

Handout with these directions plus pictures is available in my SCRIBD files (see sidebar) or click here.  Hope you’ve enjoyed this look at stamping in style with low cost but gorgeous single stamps and sets.

Tip: Stamps aren’t the only thing you can ink to get a kissable transfer.  Stampin’ Up’s Texturz plates and impressions folders for the Big Shot also have fun and interesting designs that can be inked and transferred to a “blank” stamp.

*****

Hope you enjoyed this look at single stamping and stamps under $10.   I’ll be back latter this week with more frugal stamping as well as look at a Valentine Stamp a Stack who’s cards could be altered for general use or Mother’s day as well.

Hugs and Blessings – Jean
