Chinese New Year and the Watercooler Challenge WCC18

Welcome to the WaterCooler Challenge WCC18 & of course…

Happy New Year!

Chinese New Year that is. 😀    Well actually the New Year started February 19 but the celebration extends to March 5th so I don’t think I’m too late do you?   According to various sources it’s either the year of the sheep or the goat or the ram.  As a spinner and weaver I’m pretty much good with all three though sheep’s wool is generally easier to spin by far.

To celebrate the start of a new lunar cycle I jumped into the Watercooler Challenge with the wonderful sketch contributed by another Watercooler Challenge artist Miss Jackie Susnik.   Jackie concocted the sketch using the My Digital Studio program available from Stampin’ Up!   Join the rest of the design team over at the Challenge blog website here to see the rest of the teams designs and to add your own with the linky doodad.

WCC18 Sketch Challenge

As with most sketch challenges the sketch can be turned in any direction as long as it is still recognizably this sketch.  Initially I had thought about standing the sketch on its head but in the end I used it pretty much as shown.  Note…the sketch elements are all we are challenged with…the color choices are completely our own.

The small historic mining town near where I live in Southern Oregon celebrates Chinese New Year with a passion.  At one time many of the towns businesses were owned and run by Chinese families and a tradition of celebrating the Chinese New Year was begun in the 1800’s and has continued to the modern era.  A favorite with the tourists and locals alike.  So I took that for my theme as well with lots of bright red, gold and borrowing the honeycomb design of the bee that is a much used symbol in Chinese tradition and imagery.
