Frugal Friday: Frugal stamp sets for Spring and beyond

Public Service Reminder:

Day Light Saving Time is here ~  Set your  clock’s AHEAD 1 Hour  Saturday night ( March 13, 2010)  before you  go to bed … that’s assuming you live in a state that observes daylight savings time of course – LoL!

Hi All,

Frugal Friday has morphed into Savings Saturday for most of you though actually here in Oregon its still Friday as I post this late but here on Friday none-the-less…. but other than that the routine is still the same – lol!  Lots of links to inspiring examples for every level of stamper and of course all sets featured in the Under $20 category as usual.  For a complete listing of stamps and wheels Under $20 check my sidebar or SCRIBD document file.  There are separate lists for the IBC and the Occasions mini.

Abbreviations:  W = wood    CL  = Clear Mount

Upsy Daisy – #111710, $18.95, pg.95 IBC

Various versions also available in vinyl wall décor as Décor Elements – #117566 (one of many)

With multiple texts and images that can be dressed up or dressed down this is one versatile stamp set.  And add to that basically gender neutral.   Depending on the color combo’s and embellishments you use this set works for guys and gals equally well.    So many different techniques possible from  embossing to brayering to bleaching as well as all the usual.   Add a few butterflies or birds from other sets and you have nature at its best.

Somehow I always tend to see this set used as a sunrise card and expect to see the dew dripping off the flowers as they reach for the sun with a kitty creeping along through the stems.

Spring Song – #115074, $15.95, pg. 102

Another set available as an Sale-a-Bration freebie through March 31st

If W.C. Fields was a stamper this would probably have been his favorite….My little Chickadee…get it?  Okay maybe I’m showing my age or at least my interest in old cinema with that idea but really can’t you just picture Mae West in the middle of Scrapbooking when she says come up and see me some time…if that was the setting I bet W.C. would have been surprised!   Oh well either way  this is also a favorite stamp set of mine.  One of the earliest I acquired in fact.  Probably because of the Hummingbird.  Hummingbirds and my cats have a long history. Remind me to tell you the story sometime!

Whether you color these images or simply emboss them you can’t help but see and feel the touch of spring when you see this set in use.  I have noticed one thing though.  That single bird on a branch sometimes looks incredibly angry in some cards.  Other times its just an I’ve got my eye on you kinda look.  Maybe its my imagination but I can’t help wondering how that happens.  I’ve never really thought of chickadees as particularly moody birds but this little guy sometimes seems to be.

Eastern Influences – #111628, $18.95, pg.104

Another gorgeous Asian set though one of the images is so similar to Asian Artistry I find myself getting faked out when looking at some card designs.  However I could never miss the other images in the set!  The two birds and the character are my favs in this set.  On the whole very reminiscent of the cherry trees I grew up with around the Potomac in D.C.  I’ve seen these images used in the larger Simply Adorned Charms to great effect.

Stampin’ Up! has the perfect description:

Invite the scented breezes and delicate beauty of the orient into a moment of a friend’s life with this elegant stamp set. Perfect for watercoloring with Watercolor Wonder Crayons or Stampin’ Pastels—or even used as pleasant background images—these stamps can take your mind on a journey to a peaceful paradise.

Forest Friends – #113748, $14.95, pg.109

Also available as an SAB freebie this set first appeared in last years Occasions…hm…sounds like we should be singing happy birthday to this fun quartet as it’s one year old.

The animals have a Disneyesque Bambi movie quality but the tree always makes me think of the Tree of Life drawings so prevalent in Shaker art and design.  Whether for kids or for grownups, colored or plainly inked this set is well worth the modest price.   The tree in particular lends itself to inking then thumping with markers of various hues.  A perfect set for scrapping kids pages, creating kids cards and more.  Add a little paint and you could stamp the walls of a nursery too!

And given that Easter is around the corner this has one cute little cottontail that might work for your Easter projects.  Owl and Bunny are the perfect size for peeking through a movers and shapers cut out.  You might even place your die cut right in the trees umbrella then on the inside of the card stamp the tree again with the owl in it so he peeks out through the front cut out.

One friends comment: This deer is too cute to shoot! (and for a venison lover that’s saying something!)

another great list of fabulous stamps and examples for us to drool over. I love some of the stamp sets that you have chosen to highlight and the fact that some of them are free in SAB is awesome!
I know it takes so much time for you to put this list together, so on behalf of all of us, THANK YOU!
Thank you also for honoring me by choosing to call out a couple of my examples.
