Tightwad Tuesday features Holiday Mini Frugality

Hi All,

Welcome to December!   Only one month left to the current Holiday mini so Tightwad Tuesday is going to finish up the look at stamps and wheels under $20 from this spectacular collection before it’s too late to order and enjoy them this holiday season.   For lists of all sets under $20 from both the IBC and the Holiday mini check out my Scribd downloads in the right hand side bar.

Reminder:  Holiday Mini sets are available only until January 4th.

A Brand New Year – #116838, $8.95, pg. 31 Holiday Mini – single stamp

Lots of possibilities with this single very reasonably priced stamp.  You won’t break the party budget using this for your invitations to that end of year blow out.   Leaves more for cider or champagne!   You can also stamp and cut into individual words or phrases.  Or selectively ink to get multi colors or particular words.  The only thing that could make this better would be a word or two in another language.   Though even without that this stamp has a sophisticated feel to it.  Makes me want to make that party black tie at least.  Though even if you don’t plan to party the Celebrate at the top would be great on a number of card occasions and the First would be great as well.  Can you image a list of Firsts for babies and newly married couples.  Great Scrapbooking word.  Same for the 01 too.  And the twelve o’ clock is perfect for tongue in cheek comments like….It’s twelve o’clock..do you know where your pumpkin or glass slippers are?    Beats that snarky where the hell are you snarled into a teens cell phone as they once again forget their curfew.  How much classier to put it on a card and tack it to their bedroom door :D!   Or use it for princess invitations.

Holy Family – #116513, $16.95, pg. 23 Holiday Mini – 3 stamps in set

I’m in love with this set.   My wonderfully talented sister in law who draws her own cards should be suing for copyright infringement (assuming she ever applies for those) as she has in past years created some quite close.  The funny thing is the face on Mary looks quite a bit like her (she’s an art major and likes to borrow that Renaissance and Baroque conceit artists used in subbing in their own faces – lol!).    So…now with this stamp set I can stop harboring envy and create some spectacular embossed cards of my own in a similar theme.   Wonderful stamped on candles as well as you’ll see in at least one of the links below.  The star image works on its own as well to create a star of wonder type of card.  With Scenic Season or Lovely as a Tree, perhaps some brayering and a luminous star for the Wise Men to follow and this lovely heartfelt verse inside you have a whole other type of card to send.  And of course the text will work with a number of other sets and may become a go to verse for many cards.   You could even selectively ink   “May the true joy of Christ light your world” and use it at other times of the year.   Even God’s blessings at the end of the text could be used year round.   That’s a lot of use out of one frugally priced set.  Seeing this set again reminds me of where I was trying to go with  my thoughts on Advent from last Sunday’s post.  Light and joy are inspiring themes in this run up to Christmas.  And the solid presence of Joseph in this family grouping with him watching over both Mary and Jesus touches the heart as well.  So often he’s left out of the picture…..and with so many soldier Fathers overseas this year I keep picturing Joseph standing in for those absent from home watching and protecting.   Can you tell how layered with meaning these images are for me?   Ah well on to the links….

Just Beclause – #116640, $14.95, pg. 19 Holiday Mini – 3 stamps in set

Fun, funny and irreverent this started out as my favorite funky stylized set from this mini.  Still is.  Being a book crazy I love the newsprint look that could also be paper pieced from old books.  Did you notice that the text is from The Night before Christmas?

So many ways to color whether with chalk, pencils, markers or sponge daubers.  And did you notice that the toys in the sack have a passing resemblance to the single stamp Bearing Gifts.  Perhaps SU intended us to use them together?   Possibly as a border?  The whole BeClause thing never fails to make me smile.    Repeated in black and white (or red and white) you could create some very fun gift wrap using butcher paper or freezer paper as a base.  This image also really lends itself to Kraft colors with accents of Real Red.

Snow Buddies Hostess Level 2 set – #116505, free with order/workshop of $300, pg. 5 Holiday mini

Time is running out to acquire this Level 2 Holiday Mini hostess set.  At zero dollar cost it’s the most frugal set featured today (after all can you really count the dollars you spend (or get your friends at a workshop to spend) to get the other stuff that earned you this wonderful freebie? – lol) and with 12 stamps in the set it has an amazing range and style in lots of different sized images.  Cute accessories to use with other stamp sets too.  Fun snowflakes including one that might even work for Valentines day with its mini hearts.  And wait till you see what Jan Tink did with the flourish.    The flourish image will also work as steam coming off a punch or paper pieced mug of cocoa or coffee or tea.   Or as a wind with stars twinkling through it.  Can you imagine the Top Hat rolling in the breeze?   Lots of coloring possibilities with the hats and scarves too.

Note to Self – #116527, $11.95, pg. 14 Holiday Mini – 5 stamps in set

I hate to repeat myself but once again here’s a set with many different possibilities.   Whether embossed, inked and colored or whatever lots and lots of possibilities.

The flowered branch stamp is perfect for a highlighting technique I’ve gotten very fond of using the white gel pen to give added emphasis to lines and dots, etc.  And the mini star stamp is the perfect size to add a mini star to the tops of Christmas tree stamps or even non tree stamps like the line of party hats from Party Hearty.  Add the star on the top and they become an instant row of Christmas Trees instead of hats!   And of course the sketchy image looks a lot like a double mirror image heart to me.  Might make for some interesting Valentines. And of course sideways it makes a butterfly!   The lines allow you to make your own to do  lists and journaling lines or even a practice grid for your youngster learning to print or a roadway for Loads of Love etc. Use it too to create your own grids and plaids by crossing the lines over top in both directions (perpendicular for you word freaks :D).   and of course it coordinates with the Calender kit also in the mini.  These smaller images make it easy to embellish the calendar pages.   Would also work in the Simply Adorned jewelry once they get the quality issues sorted out.

Sassy Sparkles Jumbo Wheel #116541, $8.50, pg. 25 Holiday mini

Sparkle & Shine  Jumbo Wheel – #116542, $8.50, pg. 25 Holiday mini

Coordinating wheel to the very popular Holiday mini set Delightful Decorations ( a set that’s close to the $20 frugal limit at $21.95).  Also reflects the shape of the new Ornament punch.  And as you’ll see with Andrea Walford’s card stands out very well on its own.

Can’t imagine why no one has uploaded cards to the galleries as there are a bunch of very fun ones out there.  Maybe wheels are low priority on peoples lists of ingredients?  Not low on usage though. Here’s just a few that I found when I Googled.

SCS Gallery: none

Stampin’ Addicts Gallery: none

That completes the tightwad and frugal tours of the Holiday mini.  And about time too what with Occasions and SAB only a month away!   Friday I’ll be back for a final roundup of frugal Christmas finds from the main catalog (IBC).   Until then….

Hugs and Advent Blessings – Jean
