More Playtime (continued) – More Big Shot and Movers and Shapers die tips and ideas

Hi All,

Here’s more playtime discoveries using the Big Shot and the Movers and Shapers dies.  This time I was playing with the new Movers and Shapers Holiday Collection from Stampin’ Up’s Holiday Mini.  This set has 4 of the magnetic M & S pieces only and no base included since they are meant to be used with the Curly Label M & S base.

I also played with the new Petals a Plenty and Finial Press Impressions Folders that allow you to emboss a full card front size sheet of cardstock.  And then combined the embossed pieces with the die cut windows.

Tip:  Hostess a workshop with $250 in orders and you can get that $42.95 Curly Label M&S die for only $10!!  Whoo hoo!! then pick up the 4 Holiday M & S for just $29.95 – combined that’s still less than the regular price of the Curly Label die!    And starting Thursday you can add to that deal by getting the new My Digital Studio software for half price when you have a workshop with orders totaling $400 in addition to the $10 Holiday Mini item.

In playing I discovered that in addition to the usual Movers and shapers cutting out of a shaped window I could play with layers and cut out matching windows in those layers too.   Then I took it a step further.   As I was taking quarter sections of an 8-1/2 x 11″ sheet of cardstock and running them through the Petals a Plenty and Finial Press Impressions Folder so I would have a nice stack to play with in making textured card elements I had the idea to dry cutting some shapes out of those same quarter sheets.  This would give me a window layer and the die cut piece both of which would be embossed!   Sound confusing?   Here’s a series of pictures to give you the basic idea.  I used some funky color combo’s to hopefully try to get the scans to show up a little more clearly and in some I inserted plain cardstock so you could see the window more easily.  Also a backing sheet for scanning so the lighter cardstocks would also be a tad easier to see.  None of these cards are finished by any means as they are more of a set of examples of the process.  When I get some time I’ll finish a few so you can see how they go together and post them at a later date.

One basic comment about using the Base platform Mover’s and Shapers (the base from the Curly label set) – I find the easiest way to get my card to cut cleanly and score nicely as well as line up with the later technique is to use a half sheet of 8 1/2 x 11 cardstock (ie 4-1/4 x 11″), then just gently push the paper down inside the metal edges of the die before you run it through the Big Shot. You get the cutout shape and the score line, but don’t mess up your card edges.   For the layers you see below I did something similar only again using a quarter sheet ( 4-1/4 x 5-1/2″) but this time I placed that quarter sheet in the bottom section of the base die so it lined up with the bottom edge of the card.   Both times through the Big Shot (with the full sheet and the half sheet) I left the magnetic shaper piece in exactly the same place without moving it so the two card pieces would then line up exactly.

On to the pictures for a bit more clarity.

In the top picture you can see that the base card and the quarter sheet were lined up in the die so that the shape was placed in the same spot on both sections and the two can be layered with the shape appearing through both “windows”.

In this next picture you can I hope see three layers.  The base kraft from the above picture and the quarter sheet vanilla and then the blue layer.  The blue layer was another quarter sheet I ran through (and with these dies you could actually run both the vanilla piece and the blue piece through at the same time!) the Big Shot and then trimmed 1/4″ on all 4 sides so that I could have a nicer layering piece.  Notice though that the window is still perfectly centered through all three pieces (the yellow you see is the scanner backing sheet.)  I set the cut out pieces aside and you can see a selection of them in the lower photo.  The third photo shows just a plain Curly Label Mover and Shaper card base.  One other note in the first two pictures both the blue and Vanilla Sheets were first put through the Petals a Plenty Impressions Folder and then cut with the Movers and Shapers die.   If you reverse that order there is a bit of a distortion of the window so for best results cut the windows last.

Hopefully these pictures gave you some ideas for the Holiday Movers and Shapers and the new Textured Impressions Folders.   So time to get out your own Big Shot and dies and folders and have a little playtime of your own.  With a little experimentation you can come up with some interesting combinations of your own.   And of course if you don’t have these new toys (er tools) I’d be more than happy to process your order for you.   And if you have questions about how any of the above was done or just want to kick around a few ideas feel free to drop me  a note or leave a comment.
I still have more to show you from my playtime in the next week or so.   And boy is it very hard not to dump it all in one post – but a bloggers gotta do what a bloggers gotta do right? 😀
Hugs, blessings and wishing you lots and lots of creative mojo – Jean
